From the Low Place to the Mountains! (Nepal Journal 5)

(Now we are getting to the Nepal I have always waited for...) April 14: Bihi Pedhi (low place). We are still following the Budhi Ghandaki (Old Woman River) as it snakes sharply through canyons with formidable power. This was a much better day. No rain. There is even rare sunshine peeking out. We started to see rhododendron trees--towering and blooming red. We met a woman from Slovakia & through broken conversation learned she had excruciating back pain. This was her last chance to trek Manaslu & her mission. Her Nepali guide was walking…continue reading →
Narrow Canyons, Rain, and Sickness. (Nepal Journal 4)

Narrow Canyons, Rain, and Sickness. (Nepal Journal 4)

Nepal journals continue with Ryan's perspective. Do note that spellings of Nepali names/towns, etc. may vary. In Nepal, every word has twelve variations of spelling. April 12 Today we trekked from Khorla Besi to Salleri. About the same distance as yesterday (10ish miles). But the miles don’t come easy in this terrain. We gained a net 1500 feet, but probably ascended 2-3 times that up and down endless stone steps. The brief flat sections along the river almost seemed weird. We met and chatted up a very nice Colombian girl a lunch. Tatiana,…continue reading →

The Village Life. (Nepal Journal 3)

Nepal journals continue with mine (will be some overlap in the story since Ryan & I are writing about the same trek!) Again, the tense varies from past to present similar to the writing in my journal. Dates are followed by village names--usually where we ended up that night & where I wrote my journal entries. April 10 Soti Khola Kathmandu to Araghat. 7 hours on a chartered bus ("chartered" was a weird experience). Loud Nepali music/the road morphing from bumper to bumper to small one-lane (with buses) blacktop to remarkably narrow dirt/rock.…continue reading →

Trading Roads for Trails. (Nepal Journal 2)

(I wrote the first journal--Katmandu:...and these are Ryan's first journal entries. I will be slowly but surely posting our Nepal journals in relatively chronological order. Will switch from my perspective to Ryan's and so forth. These are only mildly edited for grammar, but otherwise as written on the trail. Enjoy!) April 6-9 Kathmandu With the Banda on, we have an extended stay in the city. K-town is both nicer and worse than I imagined. Our area –Thamel- is crazy-touristy, but there is everything we need a short walk away. Met our guide, Rajbir,…continue reading →
Kathmandu: Exhaustion, Veggie Momos, & the Garden of Dreams. (Nepal Journal 1)

Kathmandu: Exhaustion, Veggie Momos, & the Garden of Dreams. (Nepal Journal 1)

Life is a whirlwind. Between transitioning back to the US of A and moving out of our storage shed and moving into new housing (exhausting); spending far too much money on bulk food at Costco (painful); figuring out how to clean our own carpets (easy); adopting a gorgeous and shy cat (yay!); getting overtime on the first day (Ryan); filling out numerous job applications (me); and lots of other life things...I realize I want to write. I know I need to follow up with all the jobs, study for ACLS (how did that…continue reading →
